When Leaders Err, the People Often Bear the Consequences. 02/04/26. Chima Offurum.

Those of you who reflected with me as we took today’s first reading (2 Samuel 24:2, 9-17) may also have recognized that the passage’s outcome was challenging, especially given its tragic consequences for the people. However, the passage becomes clearer when we consider its proper context. The census conducted by King David in itself was not an inherently wrong exercise. In any organization, knowing the population size is essential for effective planning and resource allocation. What raised concern in King David’s action was not the counting, but his motive, where he was seeking reassurance that he had enough men to wage war.

The irony in the story is striking. This same David once confronted Goliath in God’s name and emerged victorious, relying solely on divine strength (1 Samuel 17:45). Now, he placed his confidence in numbers and military might, and God did not favor that decision. As the story reminds us, when leaders err, it is often the people who bear the consequences. This result was precisely what unfolded in today’s reading. As we pray today, let us also lift our leaders everywhere; let us ask God to guide their choices so they may govern wisely and always seek the good of the communities entrusted to their care.
