Happiness Results from Wise and Faithful Living. 02/15/26. Chima Offurum.

The human search for happiness touches every aspect of life, pointing toward areas such as health, stability, meaningful relationships, and the freedom to live with purpose and joy. Today’s readings remind us that true happiness is not merely a product of external success but the fruit of wise and faithful living. In the first reading (Sirach 15:15-20), we are told that God places before us life and death, fire and water, inviting us to stretch out our hands and choose. This passage affirms human responsibility, clarifying that obedience to God’s commandments is not imposed by force but offered as a path freely embraced. Our choices shape the direction of our lives, and with every decision we move toward or away from the fullness of life.

In the Gospel (Matthew 5:17-37), Jesus deepens our understanding of the law, moving beyond external observance to the transformation of the heart. His challenging sermons invite us to become the best version of ourselves, mirroring people whose integrity, mercy, and fidelity reflect God’s righteousness. Equally, St. Paul echoes this call in the second reading (1 Corinthians 2:6-10), where he reminds us to embrace the revealed divine wisdom. This truth, surpassing human reasoning, is revealed to those willing to listen through the Spirit.

From the three readings of this weekend’s liturgy, the Church stands to encourage us to choose life, not as a burden but as the surest path to authentic happiness. As we prepare to enter the season of Lent this week, these readings place the responsibility squarely before us, urging us, through prayerful reflection and intentional choices, not to embrace death but to walk the path that leads to life in its fullest sense.
