Today is “Fat Tuesday,” a traditional observance in many places that marks the close of the extended Christmas and New Year festivities and invites us to prepare intentionally for the season of Lent.
Historically, people would empty their pantries of rich foods, meat, milk, and other indulgences, as a symbolic transition toward prayer, sacrifice, and renewal. In this spirit, the Letter of St. James (1:12) offers a clear exhortation for the journey ahead: “Blessed is he who perseveres in temptation, for when he has been proven, he will receive the crown of life that he promised to those who love him.”
As we stand on the threshold of Lent, the Church encourages us to persevere with courage and discipline; may we lift our heads with hope, prepare our hearts well, and ask God for the grace to walk this season faithfully. Amen.
