In today’s Gospel reading from the Gospel of John (John 5:17-30), Jesus speaks words that echo the mystery of creation itself. He responds to the Jews by saying, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” In this statement, Jesus reveals that God’s creative activity did not end with the first moment of creation; rather, God continues to work within history, renewing and restoring the world. The work of the Father and the Son unfolds continuously in ways that call humanity into deeper unity and purpose.
This ongoing divine work is beautifully anticipated in the prophecy of the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah 49:8-15). God promises that people will come from every direction of the earth: “See, some shall come from afar, others from the north and the west, and some from the land of Syene.” The vision is expansive. God gathers humanity from every corner of the world into one community of hope. What once seemed distant and divided now appears closer than ever, almost as though the whole world has become a single village.
Seen in this light, God’s continuing work invites us to recognize one another not as strangers, but as members of one human family. The divine project of renewal calls us to cooperate in building a world marked by compassion, justice, and shared responsibility. May we remain attentive to this work of God and commit ourselves to the good of all people. Amen.
