Lent presents Discomfort that Strengthens and Refines Us. 2/26/26. Chima Offurum.

I do not know if you have reflected on this point before, but I often wonder why many breakthroughs emerge only after a season of trial. Consider the story of Joseph and his brothers before he rose to greatness and was appointed prime minister in Egypt. He was hated by his siblings (Genesis 37:23-28), falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39:20-23) before he rose to power. Even in science and human achievement, discovery is often preceded by struggle, persistence, and sacrifice. People frequently pass through the “eye of the needle” before reaching their purpose, and the ultimate example remains the life and mission of Jesus, whose Cross became the pathway to our victory and glorification.

Today’s story of Queen Esther reinforces this truth (Esther C:12, 14-16, 23-25). She courageously risked her life by approaching the king to make her plea, and God transformed not only her destiny but the fate of all those connected to her into a moment of celebration. Esther’s witness captures the spirit of Lent, defining it as a period of discomfort that strengthens and refines us from within. As we celebrate this Mass, relying on Jesus’ command to us in today’s gospel (Matthew 7:7-12), we pray that our sacrifices for God and for truth may never be in vain. May the victory of Christ over suffering and humiliation lead us toward true breakthroughs and lasting grace. Amen.
