Lesson for Life. 3/5/26. Chima Offurum.

One of the primary ways the Church guides us in discernment and decision-making is through the Sacred Scriptures. Two other essential parts of the tripod are the Sacred Traditions of the Church and the Magisterium. The Scripture provides moral instruction but is also the theological foundation upon which we anchor our existence. In today’s first reading (Jeremiah 17:5-10), we are warned with striking clarity not to place ultimate trust in human strength or in material wealth. The prophet contrasts the one who relies on flesh with the one whose confidence is rooted in the Lord, reminding us that the stability of our lives depends on where we fix our trust.

Jesus echoes this same caution in today’s Gospel (Luke 16:19-31). Through the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus explains the spiritual danger of misplaced confidence, especially when wealth or status replaces dependence on God. Lesson for life. The message is unmistakable; whenever we transfer the trust that belongs to God to human security or possessions, deception follows. As we continue our Lenten journey, we pray for the wisdom to choose rightly, for the grace to center our lives firmly on God, and for the clarity to focus on what truly matters here on earth, so that we may inherit the greater good prepared for us in the world to come. Amen.
