After hearing the exchange between Jesus, the chief priests, and the elders, the word that stands out to me is ‘authority.’ Ultimately, all authority belongs to God. The authority that human beings exercise is limited and purposeful. By questioning Jesus’ authority to teach about love, freedom, and grace, the chief priest and elders of the people failed to grasp the deeper truth of who He was and the nature of His mission; they could not imagine that He spoke with divine authority.
However, Jesus remained unwavering in His purpose: to proclaim liberation, to reveal the true meaning of love, and to draw the world toward God’s grace. Like the patient farmer awaiting the harvest, the Church invites us to wait with trust and hope, especially during this season of Advent. As we gradually approach the coming festivities, we pray for a deeper awareness of God’s will and a renewed commitment to cooperate in bringing the reign of God’s kingdom into our world.
