The call of Samuel in today’s first reading (1 Samuel 3:1-10, 19-20) highlights one of the central themes of the First Week of Ordinary Time. It’s a reminder that God continues to call, and the faithful must learn to listen and respond. Only last Sunday, we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, an event that brought the Christmas season to its official close and opened the door into Ordinary Time.
As this new liturgical season, Ordinary Time, unfolds, the Church steadily reminds us of the shared vocation we carry as disciples: to proclaim love, to embody faith through action, and to extend the reign of God in the ordinary spaces of daily life. In this mission, we become God’s eyes, ears, hands, and feet in the world. Let us, therefore, work diligently as though everything depends on our effort, and pray faithfully as though everything depends on God.
