Remembering Chief Judge Frank Caprio (1936-2025)

On August 20, 2025, the world lost a significant legal luminary and my mentor, Judge Frank Caprio, who passed away at the age of 88 after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. When he publicly announced his illness, Frank did not ask for pity but prayers, especially to remain faithful, humble, and true to himself until the end.

Frank was best known as “the nicest judge in the world,” touching millions of lives through his work on the “Caught in Providence” television program. Beyond the cameras, though, Frank was even more remarkable, compassionate, wise, and deeply human. He came from humble beginnings in Providence, Rhode Island, and rose to a life of service as a city councilman, a municipal court judge, and later Chief Judge Emeritus. His approach to justice taught the world that kindness and fairness can walk hand in hand.

Faith was central to who Frank was. A devout Catholic, he often spoke of his trust in God and the power of prayer, even making a pilgrimage to Lourdes during his illness. His legacy is one of compassion, humility, and faith. This legacy will continue to inspire me and others who know Frank or identify with his passion for a compassionate justice system.

Adieu Frank! Rest in Peace!!
